Castle Mound

The mound itself is the real draw here - a proper Iron Age hill fort just outside Leighton Buzzard, with ramparts still visible if you know what you're looking at. It's not dramatic like the bigger forts further west, but there's something satisfying about standing on top and realising people built defences here two thousand years ago.

You're looking at maybe twenty minutes to scramble up and have a poke around. The views across the Chilterns justify the short climb, though it's not going to occupy a full afternoon. History types will get more from it than others, particularly if you're already interested in Iron Age settlements. Kids might manage the walk up, but they won't find much to actually do once they're there.

It's free and you can visit any time - no gates, no keeper. Worth combining with Hill Farm and Orchard or Merlin Farm's camping spots if you're basing yourself near Whipsnade Zoo and want a bit of local walking. The mound works best as a stop-off during a wider exploration of the Chiltern Hills rather than a destination in itself.

Go early morning if possible to avoid the Leighton Buzzard crowds, and wear decent boots - it gets muddy even when it hasn't rained.
