Leighton Buzzard Railway

A narrow-gauge railway that actually runs - that's the draw here, not just a museum piece gathering dust. The Leighton Buzzard Railway operates vintage steam and diesel trains on a two-mile stretch that takes you through proper Bedfordshire countryside, and it's genuinely absorbing whether you're six or sixty.

The trains themselves are the stars. You'll ride in carriages pulled by heritage locomotives, some dating back decades, chugging past fields and woodland with enough authentic clanking and hissing to satisfy even jaded teenagers. It's slow travel in the best sense - you can actually see the landscape roll past without whizzing through it at motorway speed.

Kids absolutely get it. Trainspotters will lose their minds; younger children find the whole experience magical. Adults enjoy the nostalgia and the meticulous restoration work on display. Allow a couple of hours including a proper look around the engine sheds if you've got the time.

Operating weekends mainly, with some weekday runs in school holidays - check their schedule before you drive over. It's free to walk the site in places, though rides cost a few quid. Located just outside Leighton Buzzard itself.

If you're based at Hill Farm and Orchard or Wingbury Farm Glamping nearby, this makes a cracking half-day addition to a park holiday. Not essential, but it's the sort of thing that creates the kind of memory kids still bang on about years later.
