Castell Cawr

The Iron Age hill fort looms above the rolling countryside between Conwy and Abergele, commanding views across North Wales from its elevated position. Castell Cawr - the name means Giant's Castle - consists of substantial earthworks and ramparts that still impress nearly two thousand years after they were built. You're essentially walking around the remains of defensive ditches and banks that once enclosed a settlement; the fort spans roughly three acres and sits at around 270 metres above sea level.

History buffs and serious walkers will find it worthwhile. It's not a place where you'll spend hours - forty minutes to an hour covers the site thoroughly - but the effort to reach it pays off with genuine views and a tangible sense of Iron Age occupation. The ramparts are still distinct enough to read the layout, and on a clear day you can see right across to the coast.

Parking and access details aren't widely publicised, which means it tends to stay quiet. The walk from nearby Abergele is moderate in difficulty; the ground is rough in places. Bring proper boots.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks dotted between here and the coast - The Beach, Bron-y-Wendon, or Golden Gate are all within a few miles - Castell Cawr makes an excellent morning excursion. It works perfectly as part of a broader Conwy Valley walk, combining Bronze Age archaeology with proper countryside. Not a destination in itself, but genuinely rewarding if you're already in the area.
