Pen-y-Corddyn Mawr Hillfort

The Iron Age fort sits high above Abergele, commanding views across the Vale of Clwyd that must have been tactically brilliant and still are bloody impressive. You're looking at two concentric banks with ditches between them - the kind of defensive earthwork that tells you this spot mattered enough to fortify properly back around 500 BC.

The walk up is steep but not punishing, and once you're standing on the ramparts the effort pays off. On a clear day you can see right across North Wales. The fort itself is largely grass-covered now, so it's not dramatic in the Instagram sense, but there's something about standing where Iron Age people stood, knowing they chose this exact spot as their stronghold.

This is one for walkers and history enthusiasts rather than casual tourists. Kids might find it dull after ten minutes unless they're the kind who get excited about ancient fortifications. Give yourself an hour if you're going slowly, half that if you just want the views and a quick circuit.

It's free to visit and there's no visitor centre, which is fine - you're out in the elements on actual archaeology rather than behind glass. Being so close to Abergele and the caravan parks like The Beach and Bron-y-Wendon means it's easy to combine with a coastal break. Pop up here for an afternoon when the weather's decent and you want something more substantial than the usual seaside stroll.
