Carlingford Pier

The pier at Carlingford is one of those places that rewards a proper wander, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Kilbroney or Sandilands. It's a working harbour with actual boats, not some sanitised seafront attraction, which means there's real character here - weathered timber, salt air, the occasional fisherman mending nets.

You're looking at maybe twenty minutes of wandering time unless you're the type to sit on a bench and watch the water for an hour. The views across the lough toward the Mourne Mountains are genuine crackers, particularly late afternoon when the light gets soft. It's free, naturally, and there's no pretence about it.

This isn't a destination in itself - you won't find gift shops or ice cream vans - but it's exactly the kind of stop that makes a caravan holiday work. Pop over from Kilbroney or Chestnutt in the morning, grab a coffee in the village if you can find one, and tick it off. The surrounding area has proper walking potential if you've got the legs for it. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting slides and arcades, but anyone who likes actual seaside towns rather than seaside theme parks will get on with it just fine. The pier works best on a clear day when you can see across to County Down properly.
