Slievefadda

The walk up Slievefadda isn't long, but it punches above its weight. From Newry, you're looking at maybe forty minutes to the summit if you're steady on your feet, and the views across the Mourne Mountains make every step worth it. On a clear day you can see right across to Carlingford Lough and into the Republic.

It's not a technical climb - more of a steady trudge up rough ground with a decent path most of the way. The peak itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but that's partly what's good about it. You won't fight crowds here. Families with older kids handle it fine; younger ones might find the final stretch tedious. Walkers after a quick morning outing will love it.

There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and sensible footwear. The ground can be boggy after rain, which catches people out. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not rushing. Weather matters - mist rolls in fast, and the mountain becomes useless when that happens.

If you're staying at Kilbroney Caravan Park just 1.5 miles away, or one of the other parks dotting the lower slopes, this is an obvious choice for a half-day adventure. It slots neatly into a Mourne Mountains itinerary without eating up your whole day. The real appeal is the solitude and the views rather than any summit drama - which is fine if that's what you're after.
