The Rowans

The Rowans is a modest peak that rises above the landscape just outside Newry, offering walkers a straightforward climb with proper views across the Mourne Mountains and beyond. It's not dramatic - you won't find the kind of panorama that makes you catch your breath - but the walk itself is pleasant enough, and on a clear day you can see a fair distance.

The ascent is gentle rather than punishing, making it accessible for families with older kids or anyone after an easy morning walk without the slog. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the car park, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's nothing technically difficult about it, and the terrain is straightforward underfoot for most of the way.

It works well as part of a wider Mourne Mountains day if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Kilbroney is closest at just under two miles, or push out to Oakwood glamping if you want somewhere more comfortable. The peak itself is free to access; you're simply walking on open moorland.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers wanting something low-commitment and families who need a half-day option rather than a full expedition. History enthusiasts probably won't find much to grip them here. It's a decent addition to a holiday in the region rather than a reason to travel specifically to Newry, but if you're based nearby and the weather's decent, it's time well spent.
