Finlieve Beg

Finlieve Beg is a modest peak in the Mourne Mountains, just outside Newry, and it's exactly the sort of walk that rewards you without demanding a full day's commitment. The summit sits at a decent height with views across the surrounding hills - nothing spectacular enough to dominate a holiday, but proper worth tackling if you're staying at one of the caravan parks scattered around the area like Kilbroney or Oakwood glamping.

The walk itself is straightforward. You'll gain height gradually through moorland terrain, and on a clear day the perspective back toward Newry and the rolling countryside gives you a real sense of where you are. Allow two to three hours if you're moving at a sensible pace and want to actually stop and look around. It's the sort of hike that works well for families who've got reasonably fit kids - nothing technical, just steady climbing.

Best visited when the weather's settled. Rain and low cloud render the views pointless, and the exposed moorland gets bleak quickly in poor conditions. Spring and early autumn are ideal - you'll avoid both the summer crowds on the bigger Mourne peaks and the worst of the winter mud.

It's free to walk, which is a given for UK mountains, and there's no official visitor centre or amenities at the summit itself. Bring water and snacks.
