Slippy underfoot and frequently shrouded in mist, Formal delivers the kind of walk that makes you question your life choices halfway up - then rewards you handsomely once you've pushed through. It's a proper peak in the Mourne Mountains south of Newry, and on a clear day the views across County Down stretch for miles. The walk itself is straightforward enough, nothing technical, but it's relentless rather than gentle. Allow a good two to three hours there and back depending on fitness.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with young children will struggle; serious hikers and mountain types will find it satisfying. The summit itself is relatively bare - you're not climbing to some dramatic rocky outcrop - but the sense of achievement is real, especially in poor visibility when you've had to navigate by instinct alone.

Freedom of access applies here, so there's no gate fee, though you'll need to park sensibly near the trailhead. Spring and early summer are best - the ground dries out faster and the light lasts longer. Avoid midweek in winter unless you fancy a grim slog.

Staying nearby at one of the caravan parks - Kilbroney is closest at just three miles away - gives you a proper mountain holiday base. You can combine Formal with easier valley walks in the Mournes if you're splitting time between varying abilities. It's not a tourist attraction in the conventional sense. It's a genuine hill that demands respect and rewards effort.
