Butterley Reservoir

Water and moorland collide at Butterley Reservoir, a proper working dam that's quietly become one of Lancashire's better walking destinations. It's not one of those chocolate-box beauty spots you'll see on postcards - the dam itself is functional, industrial even - but that's rather the appeal. The walk around it offers surprisingly decent views across the valley, with the Pennine moorland rising up behind and Greenfield village tucked below.

The reservoir pulls in walkers and cyclists mainly, plus the occasional angler. There's a footpath that circuits the water, and depending on how energetic you're feeling, you can turn it into a longer loop up onto the moors. The full walk takes a couple of hours without rushing. It's the sort of place where you might spot herons picking through the shallows or buzzards circling overhead - quietly dramatic rather than showy.

Timing matters here. Early morning or weekday afternoons are best, when you'll have the place largely to yourself. Summer weekends bring family groups and dog walkers, which is fine, but the whole charm depends on relative peace and quiet. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Dovestone Holiday Park and Secret Valley Escapes are both within five miles - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with a walk up to Dovestone Reservoir proper or a ramble on the higher moorland beyond. Not essential, but worth the detour if you're staying in the area.
