Buckden

The valley floor at Buckden opens up suddenly as you round the bend from Leyburn - steep limestone walls on both sides, a proper Yorkshire dale landscape that makes you understand why people hike in these parts. It's a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point.

You're here for the walking, really. The reserve sits in a glacial valley with grassland, woodland, and stream habitat that attracts birds and the occasional wanderer who actually knows where they're going. The paths are straightforward enough, though the walls hemming you in mean it never feels like an easy stroll - there's weight to the landscape. Most people give themselves two to three hours to explore properly, including a poke around Buckden itself, which is barely a village, more a scattering of farms and stone buildings.

It's excellent if you're halfway through a longer Yorkshire Dales circuit - you're not coming here as a day trip from Leeds, but if you're based at Stablefell Holidays and Campsite down the road near Leyburn, you'll find it a solid morning's walk with real character. Spring and early summer are best when the nesting birds are active and the valley isn't choked with school groups.

Free to access, no visitor centre nonsense. Bring decent boots though - the ground stays damp even when it looks dry. And don't expect dramatic views from a hilltop. The appeal is in the narrowness of the space and the stream work. It's understated stuff, but that's Yorkshire for you.
