Bryniau Goleu

The walk up Bryniau Goleu from Bala is a proper leg-stretcher without being too serious. It's the kind of peak that rewards you with views across the Penllyn valley and toward the Aran range - big sky country, essentially. Most people tackle it as a two to three hour round trip, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

What makes it worthwhile is that it doesn't feel touristy. You won't find a café at the top or a gift shop at the base. It's just you, the moorland, and on a clear day, genuinely expansive views of Snowdonia's backbone. The path is well-trodden but not overdone, and in spring and early summer the heather and bilberry come alive.

Walkers and fell-runners get the most from this one. Families with solid walkers might manage it, though younger kids could find the climb a bit relentless. It's worth doing on a day when the weather's in your favour - cloud cover here is brutal and kills the whole point of coming.

Bala itself is your base, and if you're staying at Tyn Cornel Camping nearby, this sits nicely as a morning walk before heading to Llyn Tegid for the afternoon. Parking's straightforward near the town. There's no entrance fee or facilities - bring water and proper boots. Go early to avoid the afternoon rain that often rolls in from the west.
