Bryn Garthmeilio

The walk up Bryn Garthmeilio from Bala takes you through proper wild moorland, steep in places and occasionally boggy underfoot, but the views across the Bala Lake valley make it well worth the effort. It's not a massive peak - nothing that'll tire you out for hours - but it's got character, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Cader Idris range, which is genuinely spectacular.

This one's for walkers who want a bit of challenge without needing ropes or serious experience. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) will manage it fine if they're decent on their feet, though younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections. The summit's modest but peaceful - you won't find crowds here like you do on some of the bigger Welsh peaks.

Bring proper waterproofs. The weather changes fast in this part of Gwynedd, and even when it's dry lower down, the exposed moorland can turn wet and windy without warning. Allow a couple of hours for the full loop if you're moving at a decent pace.

If you're basing yourself at Tyn Cornel Camping, this is absolutely worth the short drive into Bala for a morning or afternoon outing. It pairs nicely with exploring the lake itself - Bala Water's lovely for a walk along the shore. The climb's not dramatic enough to be a main event on its own, but as part of a few days in the area, it's a proper gem.
