Brough Methodist Church

The red-brick Methodist chapel on Brough's main street is the sort of building you'd walk past without thinking twice if you weren't paying attention. But step inside and you'll find yourself in one of those properly Victorian spaces where the wood panelling and original fittings have survived largely intact. It's a working church, not a museum piece, which means you might catch an organist practising or stumble on a quiet moment where you can actually sit with your thoughts.

This isn't somewhere you'll spend hours. Twenty minutes max, unless you're genuinely interested in Methodist history and the way these chapels reflected the values of working communities in 19th-century East Yorkshire. The real value here is context - it sits you down in the actual place where generations of local people gathered, rather than reading about it in a guidebook.

If you're camping at Willow Pond or Little Wold Away - both just three or four miles out - this makes a decent wet-day diversion while exploring Brough itself. The walk into town is straightforward enough. Worth a quick look if you're driving through, but don't reroute your holiday just for it. The Methodist Church tells you something true about this corner of Yorkshire, but it's not a reason to visit the area on its own.
