Melton Bottom Quarry

The flooded quarry at Melton Bottom is one of those places that sneaks up on you - you're driving through the Wolds near Brough and suddenly there's water where there should be scrubland. What was once worked for chalk and clay has transformed into a proper lake, the sort of spot that draws anglers, dog walkers, and anyone after a bit of peace away from the main roads.

The water's the real draw here. It's clear enough to see why fishing folk make the trek, and the banks are gentle enough that you can wander the perimeter without needing proper hiking gear. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the water attracts decent numbers, especially in winter. The landscape around it is very Yorkshire - flat, quiet, a bit windswept in places. Don't expect dramatic cliffs or tourist facilities. This is a working sort of space.

Truth is, you'll spend maybe an hour here unless you're fishing seriously or doing a longer walk through the surrounding countryside. It's not the sort of destination you plan a day around, but if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Willow Pond or Little Wold Away are both close - it's worth a morning wander. The fact that it's free and unpretentious counts in its favour. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dull after half an hour, but anyone who likes a quiet lakeside walk will find it does the job well.
