Boxgrove Priory

The ruins of this Norman priory sit quietly just outside Chichester, and they're worth the short detour if you're staying anywhere in the area. What remains are the substantial walls of the church - mainly the chancel and crossing - which give you a proper sense of the scale of the place when it was functioning in the 12th century. The stonework is impressive enough that you can still make out the architectural details that mattered to medieval builders: the arches, the windows, the way light would have moved through the space.

It's a free site, open access pretty much whenever you fancy a wander. Allow 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to poke around and read the information panels on site. The setting is quite peaceful - surrounded by fields rather than hemmed in by modern buildings - which makes it feel less like a museum attraction and more like stumbling onto something genuinely old.

For the serious history types, this is worth the visit. Families with younger kids might find it less gripping than a more intact castle, though the space itself is good for a bit of exploring. It works well as a break-off-the-beaten-path stop if you're based at Chichester Lakeside or any of the caravan sites within a few miles. Pair it with a proper walk around Chichester itself, and you've got a decent morning sorted. The priory is manageable on foot from the town centre, though it's not the most obvious route - worth checking locally for directions when you arrive.
