Peckham Lake

A freshwater lake just outside Chichester that's genuinely worth a morning visit if you're camping in West Sussex. The water is clear enough to spot fish, and there's a proper walking path that loops around most of it - takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. It's the sort of place where you'll see kingfishers if you're quiet, and occasionally herons having a think on the shallows.

The banks are grassy rather than wild, which makes it accessible for families with young kids, though there's nothing flashy here - no café, no facilities that I could see. Bring a picnic if you're planning to stay longer than an hour. Walkers will appreciate the circuit, especially early morning when it's just you and the waterfowl. Photography types do well out of it too, particularly if you're into wildlife.

Being practically on the doorstep of Chichester Lakeside Holiday Park (literally 0.2 miles away), it works brilliantly as an evening stroll from your pitch or a pre-breakfast walk to clear your head. If you're based at Haven Church Farm or one of the Bognor parks further out, it's worth the short drive. Summer's best - winter can be bleak and muddy around the edges. Free to access, as far as I could tell, and there's usually somewhere to park nearby without hassle.
