Bowley Hill

The walk up Bowley Hill rewards you with proper views across the Ribble Valley - the sort of countryside that makes you understand why people actually choose to live in Lancashire. It's not a mountain, more a decent fell that takes the better part of an hour from Clitheroe, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

From the top you get sight lines across to Pendle Hill and beyond, which matters if you're doing a broader walking circuit through the area. The ascent itself is straightforward enough - grassy slopes, nothing technical - though it can turn boggy after rain. The ground's a bit steep for what it is if you're not used to hills, but nothing that'd trouble most walkers.

This is proper fell-walking country rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. Bring a map, waterproof, and realistic footwear. No cafe at the summit. No facilities full stop, really. Go early or you'll hit afternoon mist rolling in from the west.

If you're staying at Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley or any of the caravan parks within a few miles of Clitheroe, this works as a morning outing before heading into town for lunch. Families with older kids will manage fine. Under-tens might find it a bit of a slog for what's essentially a walk in a field, but the views make it worth the effort. Winter's brutal up here - spring and autumn are your sweet spot.
