Bowden Hill

A proper hill walk without the Highland drama, Bowden Hill rises above the farming country west of Cupar with views that stretch right across Fife. The climb isn't particularly taxing - you're looking at maybe an hour from base to summit if you take your time - but the panorama from the top makes it well worth the effort.

Families with older kids will find this a decent introduction to Scottish hill walking. The paths are clear enough and the gradient manageable, though I wouldn't attempt it with pushchairs or very small children. Walking boots recommended - it can get muddy after rain.

What strikes you most is how much of central Scotland opens up from here. On a clear day you'll spot the Ochil Hills to the west and the Sidlaw Hills rolling north. Below, the patchwork of Fife farmland spreads out like a proper country quilt.

This works brilliantly as a half-day trip if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Balbirnie or The Rings. Pack a flask and some sandwiches - there's nowhere to buy refreshments on the hill itself. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photos, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself midweek.
