Blow's Downs Nature Reserve

The chalk grassland at Blow's Downs stretches across the Hertfordshire-Bedfordshire border east of Dunstable, and it's one of those places that looks modest on the map but rewards a proper visit. You're walking across open downland with decent views across the Chilterns, the sort of terrain that feels properly wild despite being within sight of the M1. The reserve is managed for wildflowers and butterflies, so timing matters - spring and early summer are when it earns its place on your itinerary rather than autumn when it's a bit bleaker.

This isn't a destination with facilities or facilities or queues. It's free, it's open year-round, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on how many of the walking routes you fancy. Families with decent walkers will get on with it; younger kids might find it a bit monotonous after the initial novelty wears off. Serious botanists and butterfly enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding, and it's a solid choice for breaking up a park holiday rather than a main attraction in itself.

The real value comes if you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade Zoo or Woodlands Caravan Site - both within a couple of miles. You can easily combine it with a visit to Whipsnade itself, using the downs as a quieter counterpoint to the zoo crowds. On a good spring morning with the wildflowers coming through, it's a proper bit of chalk country and worth the detour from your touring base.
