Blaxhall Common

You'll find Blaxhall Common a few miles east of Woodbridge, a proper slice of Suffolk heathland that feels properly removed from the modern world. It's an open expanse of gorse, heather and grassland - the kind of landscape that dominated East Anglia centuries ago before farming took over. Walk it in spring and the gorse is luminous yellow. Summer brings purple heather. Autumn's golden, winter's stark.

There's not much infrastructure here and that's rather the point. No visitor centre, no car park facilities to speak of. You just pitch up, lock the car and go. The common is free to access and perfect for a two-hour ramble if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Wantisden Park is only 3.6 miles away, or Brick Kiln Farm Camping if you prefer something smaller.

Walkers will get far more from this than families after a structured afternoon. Kids might find the open ground monotonous after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on nature spotting. The paths can get boggy in winter and the exposure means wind can bite hard. That said, it's excellent for anyone doing the Suffolk walking circuit - close enough to Carlton Meres or Cakes & Ale to combine with a park stay.

If you're expecting dramatic views or notable wildlife centres, adjust expectations. This is about the solitude and the light across the heather. On a grey day it can feel bleak. On a clear one, it's genuinely restorative. Worth the detour if you're in the area, not worth travelling specifically for unless you're after serious walking country.
