Woodbridge

The River Deben curves lazily through this market town, bringing an unmistakable maritime feel to what might otherwise be just another Suffolk settlement. Woodbridge sits perfectly between countryside and coast, with the tidal river offering everything from peaceful walks along the quayside to proper sailing opportunities.

Wander down to the waterfront and you'll find the town at its most relaxed. The Tide Mill, one of the few working examples left in the country, is well worth a look - though it's the riverside pubs that really capture the spirit of the place. From here, footpaths lead out into some lovely Suffolk countryside, including walks through Kiln Field Wood and the neighbouring plantations.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - it's a straight run up the A12 from London, or there's a decent rail connection via Ipswich. The town makes a cracking base for exploring this stretch of the Suffolk coast too. Aldeburgh's just twenty minutes north for its famous fish and chips, while Felixstowe's beaches are even closer if you fancy a proper seaside day out.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area gives you the best of both worlds. You're close enough to nip into Woodbridge for dinner or a pint, but far enough out to enjoy the peace of the Suffolk countryside. Several parks like Steadings Park and Run Cottage offer touring pitches, while Woodbridge Glamping provides something a bit different if you don't fancy roughing it. The location works brilliantly - you can explore the Deben Valley one day, hit the coast the next, and still be back for a quiet evening under the stars.
