Rendlesham East Gate

The Rendlesham East Gate sits on the edge of one of Suffolk's largest forests, offering sweeping views across the Sandlings landscape. It's essentially a viewing platform at a former military site, and what you get is a proper vantage point over woodland, heathland, and the occasional glint of water in the distance. Not a dramatic vista by Alpine standards, but genuinely peaceful and expansive if you catch it on a clear day.

This works best for walkers tackling the forest trails around Rendlesham rather than as a destination in itself. History enthusiasts might find interest in the military heritage of the location, though there's minimal interpretation on site. A quick stop is maybe twenty minutes - enough to take photos, breathe in the forest air, and move on. Families with young kids won't find much to occupy them beyond the novelty of the height and view.

Free access, as far as the landscape goes, though parking facilities depend on which forest car park you use. It's worth combining with walks through Rendlesham Forest itself, which has proper trail networks. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wantisden Park is closest at just over a mile away, or Run Cottage at three miles - this makes a natural loop rather than a solo trip. Early morning visits are best, before the forest gets busy and while light's clean across the landscape. Don't expect facilities; bring water and dress for changeable weather.
