Staverton Thicks

Ancient woodland east of Woodbridge doesn't sound like much until you actually walk into it. Staverton Thicks is one of Suffolk's oldest forests, with trees that have been standing for centuries - proper gnarled oaks and sweet chestnuts that make you feel small. The trails wind through dense woodland where the light filters through in layers, and you'll spot ferns and moss covering everything. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre or cafe, no interpretive boards explaining what you're looking at - you just walk. That's either brilliant or a bit frustrating depending on your mood. Bring a decent map or download offline directions because the paths can be hard to follow in places. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to properly explore rather than just potter about for twenty minutes.

The nearest proper stopping point is Woodbridge, a handsome market town on the River Deben. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Wantisden Park is less than a mile away, or Run Cottage Touring Park at four miles - Staverton Thicks works well as a morning walk before heading into town for lunch. It's not spectacular or Instagram-famous, which is precisely why it's worth visiting. You won't find crowds here, just decent woodland and the kind of quiet you've probably forgotten exists.
