Black Wood

The woodland walk through Black Wood, just outside Carnforth, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient oaks and beech trees tower overhead, creating a proper cathedral of green - the kind of canopy that makes you forget the motorway's only a few miles away.

It's woodland as it should be: muddy paths, the smell of leaf litter, birdsong. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and it's ideal for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground without constant hand-holding. There's something compelling about getting lost in your own head among the trees, though the walks aren't extensive enough to eat up more than an hour or two.

The main appeal is simplicity. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no Instagram backdrop - just actual forest. You'll need decent boots unless you've visited recently and it's been dry. Access appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally in Carnforth before heading out, as woodland access rules can be particular.

It's not a destination in itself, mind you - don't rearrange your Lancashire itinerary around it.
