Black Wood

Ancient oaks and beech trees tower overhead as you wander the winding paths through this proper Cheshire woodland, just a short drive from Chester's city centre. Black Wood feels worlds away from the nearby A-roads, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy and the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot. The network of informal trails makes it perfect for an hour's ramble - though families with young children might find the uneven terrain a bit challenging in places. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and you'll often spot red squirrels if you're quiet enough. The wood connects to the broader Delamere Forest area, so dedicated walkers can easily extend their route for a longer adventure. No facilities or marked trails means it's very much a 'turn up and explore' kind of place - bring proper walking boots if it's been wet. Given its proximity to several holiday parks including The Ridgeway Country Holiday Park and Delamere Forest Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it makes a lovely morning excursion before heading to Chester's Roman walls or the nearby Delamere Forest visitor centre. Worth combining with a pub lunch in one of the surrounding villages for a proper day out.
