Castle Cob

Walking the footpath from Frodsham towards Helsby, you'll spot the grass-covered remains of what was once a proper medieval motte and bailey castle. Castle Cob sits on elevated ground with decent views across the Cheshire countryside, though don't expect towering walls or dramatic ruins - this is earthworks territory.

The motte still stands a good height above the surrounding fields, and you can make out the circular bailey where the castle's outer defences once stood. It's one of those sites where you need a bit of imagination to picture what was here 800 years ago, but the defensive positioning makes perfect sense when you see the commanding views it offered.

History buffs will appreciate this as a genuine Norman fortification, likely built in the 12th century to control the local area. Families with older kids who don't mind a country walk will find it interesting enough for half an hour, though younger ones might get restless quickly.

The site appears to be freely accessible - it's basically in farmland with public footpath access. Allow 30 minutes unless you're combining it with a longer walk in the area.
