Black Moss Reservoir

The water here sits surprisingly dark - hence the name - backed by moorland that rolls toward the Pennines. Black Moss Reservoir isn't the prettiest of West Yorkshire's reservoirs, but it's genuinely peaceful, especially if you approach from Greenfield and catch it on a quieter weekday morning.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. The circuit around the water takes a solid couple of hours depending on pace, and the path varies between tarmac and rougher moorland track. You won't find cafes or visitor facilities - bring a flask. Birdwatchers do well here, particularly in autumn migration, and anglers know it as a decent trout water, though you'll need permission to fish.

The setting matters more than the reservoir itself. The moorland that surrounds it has proper character, and on a clear day you get good views across to higher ground. It's the kind of place that rewards a visit if you're already walking in the area - combining it with nearby Secret Valley Escapes or Whitegate Leisure Camping and Caravan Site makes sense as part of a broader Peak District or Pennine holiday.

Not worth a special trip from Manchester or Leeds, but absolutely worth an hour or two if you're based at one of the local parks. Kids will manage the walk if they're keen, but there's nothing to break it up - no play areas, no interpretation boards. A genuine outdoor spot, free to explore, with no crowds to speak of.
