Bennett's Recreation Ground

You'll find Bennett's Recreation Ground just outside Dunstable, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - grassland, trees, and enough space to let the kids run about without feeling like you're herding cats through a theme park.

The ground itself is straightforward: open access to walk around, spot birds if you're into that sort of thing, and generally decompress from whatever brought you to Buckinghamshire in the first place. It's free, naturally, and you can spend anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how much you want to wander. There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could pin down, so come prepared.

For families staying at nearby Merlin Farm Camping - which sits just 2.1 miles away near Whipsnade Zoo - this is a decent half-morning option when the zoo's either rammed or you fancy something quieter. Walkers will appreciate it as a gentle addition to a bigger route through the Chiltern Hills. History types won't get much here, mind - this is nature reserve, not heritage site.

The real value is in the simplicity. No entrance fees, no queues, no Instagram crowds. Just grassland and the occasional heron. It works well alongside the camping sites in the area - Woodlands Caravan and Motorhome Touring Site is 3.4 miles away - as an easy leg-stretcher when you need a break from camp.
