Benbow Pond

Water reflects the surrounding woodland at Benbow Pond, a small lake that's more about quiet contemplation than dramatic scenery. It's the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking near Petworth rather than drive out specifically to see, though that's not a criticism - sometimes the best discoveries are the accidental ones.

The pond itself is peaceful, ringed by trees and open enough that you get decent views across the water. There's no formal infrastructure that I'm aware of, no cafe or visitor centre, which means it stays refreshingly undisturbed. It's ideal for walkers exploring the local footpaths, and families after a gentle amble will find it manageable - though there's not much to hold kids' attention beyond chucking stones in the water and spotting the odd waterfowl.

If you're staying at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Woodfire at Westerlands, both within a couple of miles, Benbow Pond makes a logical detour on a morning walk. Allow 30 minutes unless you're the type who likes to sit on the bank with a thermos for an hour. Go early if you want solitude - weekends can draw a few more people, though it never gets properly crowded.

Real talk: it's nice rather than spectacular. Don't rearrange your itinerary to visit it, but if you're in the area and the weather's decent, the walk there is more rewarding than the destination itself.
