Bellever Tor

The walk up Bellever Tor is properly steep, but honestly, that's half the point. You're climbing granite - proper Dartmoor granite - and it gets windier and more exposed the higher you go, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes your legs remember they exist. The actual tor itself isn't massive, but the views across the moor once you reach the top are genuinely worth the huff and puff. You can see for miles. Tavistock sits off to the west, and the whole landscape just rolls away in that particular way moorland does - brown and purple and green depending on when you visit. The walk takes maybe forty minutes up and thirty back down if you're not stopping for photos, though most people do. It's free, obviously, since it's just moorland. Walkers will love this, particularly those who've got decent boots and don't mind a bit of exposure. Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless - the gradient doesn't let up much, and there's no shade whatsoever. Summer afternoons can be brutal up there. Winter's often clearer for views, but the wind can be vicious. Since you're staying within sight of Dartmoor National Park itself, Bellever Tor makes a cracking half-day outing if you want something with actual views rather than just tramping forest tracks. Go on a clear day or don't bother - cloud rolls in fast up here.
