Bare Methodist Church

The grey stone chapel sits alone on the moorland between Carnforth and the fells - no shop, no visitor centre, just a working Methodist church that's been standing since 1840. Inside, it's all dark wood pews and simple whitewashed walls. The sort of place where you can actually hear the wind outside.

Bare Methodist draws walkers far more than tourists. It's the kind of building you stumble upon while crossing the moors rather than plan a trip around. The real appeal is location - you're on proper Lancastrian moorland with views that stretch for miles. On a clear day the light comes through those small windows in a way that makes you understand why people built churches in remote places.

Allowing half an hour is generous. It's free to visit and usually open during daylight hours, though ringing ahead makes sense given its remote setting. Winter weekends can be bleak - go in spring or autumn when the light is better and the walk to reach it doesn't feel like a slog.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Bay View or Crook O'Lune are both within a few miles - this works as a morning detour rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with a longer walk across the fells. The church is worth the leg stretch, but don't expect crowds or facilities. Bring a torch if you're visiting late afternoon.
