Arthurs Stone

Five thousand years ago, someone hauled massive stones up a windswept hilltop and built what locals now call Arthur's Stone. This Neolithic burial chamber sits on Dorstone Hill, roughly nine miles west of Hereford, looking rather like a giant's table abandoned after dinner.

What strikes you first is the sheer size of the capstone - a colossal slab balanced on nine upright stones, creating a dramatic silhouette against the sky. The whole structure feels ancient in a way that gets under your skin. Archaeological types reckon it's actually older than Stonehenge, though it gets a fraction of the visitors.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from this place. The views across the Golden Valley are properly spectacular on a clear day, stretching into Wales. Families might find it a bit remote - it's a fair trek from the nearest car park and there's not much for restless kids once you've seen the stones.

Access is free, as you'd expect for something plonked on a hillside. Allow an hour or two if you're combining it with a decent walk. The site works well as a day trip from holiday parks around Hereford - Poston Mill and Heart of the Wye Glamping are both within easy driving distance. Just don't expect any facilities up there beyond the stones themselves and that magnificent view.
