Arthur's Stone

Standing on the windswept heights of Cefn Bryn, this Bronze Age burial chamber has been drawing visitors for over 4,000 years. The massive capstone - weighing around 25 tonnes - balances precariously on smaller supporting stones, creating one of Wales' most impressive prehistoric monuments.

Legend claims King Arthur threw the stone here from Carmarthen, though archaeologists reckon it's actually the remains of a Neolithic tomb. Either way, the views across the Gower Peninsula are properly spectacular on a clear day.

History buffs will love pondering the engineering feat our ancestors pulled off here, while kids enjoy scrambling around the massive stones. The site's completely free and accessible year-round, though the rough moorland track means it's not suitable for pushchairs.

Allow about an hour to explore and soak up the atmosphere. Early morning or late afternoon light makes for the best photos, and you'll often have the place to yourself.
