Gower National Landscape

The Gower Peninsula deserves far more than an afternoon visit. This National Landscape - Wales's first official designation of its kind - stretches across 188 square kilometres of coastline and countryside just minutes from Swansea, and it's genuinely worth building a holiday around.

What you're actually getting is access to proper walking territory. Rhossili Bay alone will eat up several hours if you do it right, and the clifftop paths between Three Cliffs Bay and Oxwich are consistently excellent. The landscape isn't uniformly dramatic - you'll find quiet farmland, small villages like Llangennith, and stretches of golden sand interspersed with the more theatrical coastal bits. The geology shifts constantly, which keeps things interesting whether you're a casual stroller or a proper hiker.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young children can manage the easier coastal sections, particularly around Oxwich, but the real appeal here is for people who actually want to walk somewhere rather than tick a box. The weather can turn quickly, so go prepared.

The area isn't charging you to visit - it's a National Landscape, not a ticketed attraction. You'll want at least three days to see the best bits without rushing. Several caravan parks sit within a couple of miles: Gower Farm Touring & Camping Park and Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park are the closest, putting you right in the thick of it.

Frankly, if you're in Swansea and don't venture onto the Gower, you're missing what makes the area worth staying for.
