Ancient oaks stretch their gnarled branches overhead as you step into what feels like a forgotten corner of Herefordshire. Caeperthy Wood, just outside Hereford, offers the sort of woodland ramble that reminds you why proper old English forests still matter.

Walkers will find themselves on well-trodden paths that wind through mixed woodland, with enough variety to keep things interesting without being overly challenging. The canopy changes character with the seasons - brilliant green in spring, dense and cool in summer, spectacular in autumn. It's the sort of place where you'll hear more birdsong than traffic.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will get the most from this spot. Toddlers might find the terrain a bit much, but anyone who can manage uneven ground will enjoy exploring the various trails. The wood connects well with a holiday at nearby sites like Poston Mill or Heart of the Wye Glamping, both within easy driving distance. It's free to wander, making it a lovely low-cost addition to any Herefordshire break.
