Arnsbarrow Hill

The walk up Arnsbarrow Hill from Windermere is short enough to fit between breakfast and lunch, yet steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit views. It's a proper fell rather than a fell walk - you're looking at around 45 minutes of proper climbing through woodland before the landscape opens out and you can see across to the main Lake District peaks.

What makes it worth the effort is that it's genuinely quiet compared to the honeypot routes. You'll get sight of Windermere itself from the top, the town spread out below, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough that you stop noticing your legs hurt. The fellside is boggy in places and the path doesn't always feel super well-trodden, so proper boots are a good idea rather than trainers.

For families with competent walkers aged eight or up, this works well - the ascent is relentless rather than technical, and there's a real sense of achievement that comes with summiting. The woodland offers shade on hot days, which matters when the Lake District gets busy. Allow just over an hour both ways if you're taking photos and catching your breath.

Park near Windermere town and head up from there - parking is straightforward and the trailhead isn't obscure, just not sign-posted to death.
