Scrambling up through bracken and rough fell grass, you'll find this modest 340-metre peak offers surprisingly satisfying views across the southern Lake District. The summit sits just west of Windermere, making it a proper little workout without the commitment of the bigger fells. Getting to the top takes about 45 minutes from the nearest car park, though the path isn't always obvious through the heather. Worth noting there's no marked trail - it's more of a rough scramble that navigation-savvy walkers will appreciate. The reward at the top is a lovely panorama taking in Windermere's full length, with the Coniston hills rising beyond. Families with older kids who fancy something more adventurous than the tourist trails will find this a cracking alternative to the busier peaks. That said, it's not one for pushchairs or anyone uncomfortable with pathless terrain. The ascent can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Best tackled on clear days when the views justify the effort - on grey mornings you might wonder why you bothered. If you're staying at Park Cliffe or Hill of Oaks, it's practically on your doorstep. Allow two hours for the round trip, longer if you're stopping for sandwiches at the summit cairn.
