Bishop Woods

Dense woodland spreads across the hillside just outside Windermere, offering proper walking territory away from the lake's tourist crowds. Bishop Woods covers a fair chunk of fell country with well-marked paths that wind through native oak, birch and pine - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will find plenty to keep them busy here, from gentle strolls suitable for families to more challenging routes that climb toward open fell. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the forest floor, while autumn turns the canopy into a proper riot of colour.

Children enjoy the adventure of woodland exploration, though younger ones might tire after an hour or so on the steeper sections. Dog walkers love it here - loads of space to let the hounds off the lead safely away from traffic.

Access appears to be free, though parking can be limited during busy periods. Allow two to three hours for a decent ramble, more if you're planning to tackle the higher paths. It's well worth combining with a trip to Windermere itself, being just a short drive from the town centre.
