High Dale Park

Thick woodland carpets the hillsides above Windermere, and High Dale Park offers a proper slice of Lakeland forest without the crowds that swarm the more famous fells. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, birch and pine - with glimpses of the lake below when the trees thin out.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore here. The terrain's varied enough to keep little legs interested, though pushchair access is limited once you leave the main tracks. Dog walkers love it too - acres of sniffing territory and streams for a paddle.

Expect a good two to three hours if you're doing the full loop, less if you stick to the lower paths. The going can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are wise. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn serves up proper golden colours.

What makes this spot work well for a Lake District break is its proximity to several holiday parks around Windermere. Park Cliffe and Hill of Oaks are both under three miles away, making High Dale an easy morning walk before lunch by the lake. It's quieter than Grizedale Forest but delivers the same woodland atmosphere without the mountain bike traffic. Not spectacular, but a lovely escape when the main tourist trails feel too busy.
