Low Dale Park

Low Dale Park is a proper forest walk just outside Windermere - the sort of place locals know about but most tourists miss entirely. You're looking at woodland trails winding through mature trees, with decent stretches along what feels like genuine Lakeland forest rather than manicured park land. The paths are generally well-maintained, though after rain they can get boggy in patches.

This works best for walkers who want something quieter than the honeypot trails around Windermere town itself. Families with primary-school-age kids will manage fine - there's enough length to tire them out without being punishing. Dog owners love it; the forest gives dogs proper scope to run. History buffs won't find much, but if you're after fresh air and actual trees rather than tourist infrastructure, you'll rate it.

Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on which paths you take. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need. No parking charges that I can find, and access appears to be free - typical for Cumbrian forests.

If you're staying at Hill of Oaks or Park Cliffe Windermere, both are within two miles, making it a straightforward morning outing. It slots nicely between lake activities and the bigger walking loops around the region. Winter's actually decent here - the forest feels properly atmospheric, and fewer people means quieter trails. Worth the detour if you've got a day in Windermere and want to escape the crowds for a couple of hours.
