Lazy Bay

Three quarters of a mile south of Windermere's town centre, this small lake sits quietly off the tourist trail. The name tells you everything - Lazy Bay is the sort of place where time moves slowly and the biggest decision is which tree to sit under.

Walking around the shoreline takes about twenty minutes at a gentle pace. The water is shallow and surprisingly warm on summer days, making it proper lovely for families with young children who fancy a paddle without the crowds of Windermere itself. Dog walkers seem to love it here too - there's usually a spaniel or two having a proper splash about.

Access is free and straightforward, though parking can be limited during peak summer weekends. The best approach is on foot from Windermere town, following the footpath that winds through some pleasant woodland. Early morning or late afternoon visits reward you with the place largely to yourself.

Honestly, it won't keep anyone occupied for more than an hour or two, but that's rather the point. Teenagers might find it dull, but younger kids and anyone seeking a quiet spot away from the Lake District's busier attractions will find it well worth the short walk.
