Ardchattan Church

The ruins of Ardchattan Church sit quietly on a peninsula jutting into Loch Etive, about three miles north of Oban. What you'll find is a 13th-century church that's seen better days - roofless now, with just the stone walls and a scattering of weathered gravestones to show for its long history. It's genuinely atmospheric rather than grand, which makes it all the better.

The church itself is free to wander around, and there's no rush - you're not fighting crowds here.

Historically inclined visitors will find it worth the trip. The site dates back to the 13th century and was connected to an adjacent monastery, though you'll need imagination to picture that now. Most families will get thirty to forty minutes out of it before restlessness sets in - it's not a place with much to do, just to be in.
