Connel Bridge

The A85 crosses Loch Etive via this iron cantilever bridge, and it's genuinely worth stopping for. Built in 1903, Connel Bridge is one of Scotland's engineering landmarks - a proper Victorian feat that still carries traffic today and looks dramatic from almost any angle.

What strikes you first is how the bridge seems to span the entire width of the loch in one bold sweep. There's a small pull-off on the approach to Oban where you can get out and photograph it properly, and the views are excellent whether you're coming from the north or south. The engineering itself is worth a moment's thought - the curved arch and the way it sits against the Highland backdrop make it far more photogenic than most working bridges.

You won't spend hours here, but thirty minutes allows time to stop, walk around, and take it in. Families with younger kids might manage ten minutes before they want to move on. The real appeal is the engineering history and the setting rather than any interactive experience.

If you're staying at Loch View Luxury Pod or North Ledaig Caravan Park just down the road, the bridge is practically on your doorstep. It works well as a stop en route to Oban itself, or as part of a loop drive around Loch Etive. Don't treat it as a destination in itself, but do stop if you're passing. It's the kind of Victorian engineering that doesn't get celebrated enough.
