Oban

Seafood doesn't get much fresher than what you'll find in this working port town on Scotland's west coast. The harbour bustles with fishing boats and ferries heading to the Inner Hebrides, while the famous seafood restaurants along the waterfront serve langoustines pulled from the water that morning.

Oban earns its reputation as the 'Gateway to the Isles' - McCaig's Tower crowns the hilltop like a Scottish Colosseum, offering sweeping views across the Sound of Mull. The distillery in the town centre has been producing single malt whisky since 1794, and you can smell the malty sweetness drifting through the streets on still days.

Beyond the town, the landscape opens into proper Highland drama. Loch Eck stretches for miles through forested hills, while smaller lochs like Lochan Uaine and The Black Lochs provide quieter spots for walking. Connel Ferry marks the start of some excellent hiking territory - Barn Mòr and Cruach Clenamacrie offer challenging climbs with rewarding views.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A85 runs directly from Glasgow in about two and a half hours, while the railway terminates right in the town centre. Ferries depart regularly for Mull, Iona, and the Outer Hebrides.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense if you're planning island-hopping adventures or exploring the surrounding lochs and mountains. North Ledaig and Seaview both offer touring pitches close to town, while Tralee Bay provides a more secluded base for those seeking peace between excursions. The combination of harbour convenience and Highland access is hard to beat.
