Dun Creagach, dun site

Iron Age fortifications don't come much more atmospheric than this crumbling dun perched above the Argyll coastline. What remains of Dun Creagach's stone walls tells the story of an ancient hilltop stronghold, where Celtic chieftains once surveyed their territory and watched for raiders from the sea.

Clambering up to the site takes a bit of effort - the path isn't marked and you'll need to pick your way through bracken and over loose stone. But archaeology enthusiasts will find it well worth the scramble. The circular defensive walls are still clearly defined, and on a clear day the views stretch right across to the islands beyond Oban.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will get the most from a visit here. Younger ones might find the rough terrain challenging, and there's not much to see once you arrive unless you're genuinely interested in ancient history. Allow an hour for the round trip from wherever you park.

It's free to explore, naturally, though finding it requires a bit of local knowledge or a decent map. The site works brilliantly as part of a longer day out from any of the holiday parks near Oban - Loch View Luxury Pod and North Ledaig Caravan Park are both within easy striking distance. Just don't expect signposts or facilities.
