Afon Ogwen

The Afon Ogwen is a proper river valley walk rather than a managed visitor attraction, and that's exactly what makes it worth your time. Running through Gwynedd near Bangor, this nature reserve follows the river as it cuts through wooded slopes and open moorland - you're looking at genuine Welsh landscape, not a themed experience.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. The river itself is the draw: fast-flowing water, rocky banks, and patches of riparian woodland that feel properly wild. There are decent walking routes along the valley, though you'll want decent boots and an OS map - this isn't a manicured trail with signage every fifty metres. The gorge sections are the best bit, where the water narrows and the banks rise up either side.

It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from an hour on a short stretch to a full day if you're doing the longer valley walk. Spring and early summer work best - the water levels are manageable and the woodland's in leaf. Winter's wilder but can be wet and muddy in places.

Stay at Ogwen Bank, which sits right on the doorstep, or base yourself at one of the larger parks like Llanberis Touring Park (4.5 miles) or Glamping in Llanberis (4.9 miles) if you want more facilities. It pairs well with Snowdonia walks - you're close enough to do Snowdon itself or explore the surrounding peaks. Not a destination on its own, but brilliant if you're already in the area hiking.
