The cobblestones of York's ancient streets tell stories that span two millennia, but venture just outside the city walls and you'll find something rather different. This particular corner of the East Riding feels refreshingly removed from the tourist crowds that pack the Minster and Shambles during peak season.

Pocklington sits at the heart of this quieter countryside, a proper market town that locals actually use rather than just pose in. The Burnby Hall Museum houses an impressive collection, while Pocklington Arts Centre punches well above its weight with touring productions that would make London fringe venues jealous. St Margaret's Church anchors the community, and the surrounding woodland - Hillside Plantation, Ousethorpe Wood, and Foxcovert Wood - provides cracking walking country.

Archbishop's Palace might be reduced to archaeological fragments now, but it hints at the area's medieval importance when church politics shaped kingdoms. These days, the KP Club golf course offers rather more leisurely pursuits, and Canal Head Picnic site makes a lovely spot for families.

Getting here from York proper takes about twenty minutes by car, following the A1079 east through rolling countryside that's quintessentially Yorkshire without being showy about it. The Wolds rise gently to the north, creating that characteristic big-sky landscape that photographers love but never quite capture.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - whether it's the glamping pods scattered through the area or the more traditional touring sites - gives you the best of both worlds. You're close enough for easy day trips into York's medieval heart, but far enough out to appreciate why Yorkshire folk are so fiercely proud of their countryside. Plus, you'll dodge the city parking fees and actually get a decent night's sleep without hen parties stumbling past your window at 2am.
