You can easily spend an hour here without feeling rushed, longer if you sit by the water and actually notice things.

Walkers and garden enthusiasts will get far more from this than thrill-seekers. If you're staying at somewhere like Wolds Glamping Pods just down the road or Yapham Holds nearby, it's worth a morning visit before heading into York proper. The best approach is to ring ahead - opening hours and admission aren't straightforward from a distance. Don't expect crowds, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you're after. It's understated enough that you'll probably have the place nearly to yourself, especially midweek. Proper Yorkshire, really.
