Barmby Fields - Dog Walking Field

Wide open fields just outside York where dogs absolutely lose their minds. That's Barmby Fields - essentially a proper working agricultural landscape that's become the spot locals take their hounds to burn off energy. It's flat, it's spacious, and there's nothing between you and the sky except the occasional tree line in the distance.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping pods - Wolds Glamping or Yapham Holds are closest - this is your answer to "where can I let the dog run properly". There's no faffing about with leads here. The field itself is genuinely vast, so even when it's busy you won't feel crowded. Fair warning though: it gets muddy. Not gently muddy. After rain it's a proper bog, so wellies are essential if you want to leave with trousers still clean.

For walkers without dogs, it's less compelling. There's no marked trail, no cafe, no infrastructure really. You're just walking across a field. But if you've got a spaniel or a collie or any sort of working breed that needs to move, this beats a lead walk around York city centre by miles. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how exhausted you want your dog when you get back to the glamping pod.

The nearest town is York itself, so you're perfectly positioned for a break that combines dog freedom with proper days out exploring the city. Just time your visit for a dry spell if you can.
